HK01 | A one-stop online university information platform

will assist students in their university applications, incorporating AI elements to provide personalized university application advice.

2024-07-09

Currently, students need to independently gather course information from various universities when applying to college, which can easily lead to poor decisions due to a lack of transparency, impacting their future employment prospects. In response, Tina and Angela decided to establish the online platform Uni-D, which aggregates course information from local and overseas universities, providing students with a one-stop shop for information on different universities and disciplines. They also offer paid college application counseling services to help students plan for the future. The two stated that Uni-D, as an edtech company supported by the Science Park, has already been adopted by several local secondary schools. In the future, they hope to use student data to build AI data models, providing students with personalized college application advice through AI.

One-stop college application information helps students make the best college application decisions.

Uni-D CEO Tina Wu previously worked at an overseas college application agency, specializing in providing college application advice to students. She stated that currently, students need to independently visit the websites of various universities to find information about their desired programs, such as admission requirements and entrance scores, which limits their choices rather than allowing them to make the best decision based on sufficient information.

She gave an example: the platform currently provides students with free information on admissions to local and overseas universities, displayed on a map, in the hope that when students consider further education, they will not limit themselves to local or overseas universities, but discover the courses and future paths that best suit them.

Students applying to university need to plan ahead; the platform provides application guidance and internship opportunities.

Angela Ng, Uni-D's academic leader and partner who previously worked in admissions at a local university, added that based on her past experience, many students apply to universities simply based on their public examination scores to see which courses they meet, without first understanding their personal aspirations and whether the course content suits them or aligns with their future development. She believes that secondary school students should begin planning 1 to 4 years before entering university.

When asked why it's necessary to plan for university entrance several years in advance, she cited the example of Hong Kong students choosing their high school electives when transitioning from Form 3 to Form 4, and the combination of these electives determines which university courses they can apply for. Another example is that American universities, in addition to considering academic performance, also place great importance on students' extracurricular activities and personal experiences; students intending to study in the US need to prepare well in advance.

Angela said that Uni-D also offers college counseling services, with experts helping students build extracurricular activity files, prepare for interviews, write personal statements, and choose schools. They also provide extracurricular activity and reading suggestions to equip students for their desired courses.

In addition, to help students fully understand their subjects of interest, Uni-D can assign educational mentors. These mentors come from different professional fields and can help students gain a deeper understanding of different industries. The platform can also arrange internship opportunities for students, allowing them to learn about different industries and enrich their personal learning portfolios.

Local secondary schools are using future-training AI models to provide accurate college application advice.

Speaking of future development plans, Tina said that some local schools have already purchased the platform service for students to use. In the future, she hopes to use student data to train AI models and replace the current manual processes for school matching and self-introduction editing with AI, so as to provide more students with personalized college counseling advice.
